At Dawn

Description

"She always came here, every morning and evening. Sitting on her favourite rock, she would watch the sky change colours and feel the sunrays on her pale skin. Every evening she would wonder at the strange ball of light diving down into the ocean. Sometimes she searched for it all night in her moist world, though she never found it there. But she would be back at dawn, to watch it rise into the open vastness above her again."

Well, how's that about cliche fantasy stories lol! I don't really know if I should call her a new origional character, because I don't know if I'll ever draw her again. But who knows, maybe I will, because I like the way she turned out. Plus I've always liked mermaids. I don't really have a name for her, but I was thinking about calling her Marina. Any other suggestions?

Never thought I'd be so quick with submitting things, huh? I had this drawing practically finished for a long time, I only had to work on the rock she's sitting on and a little on the water surrounding it. But I'd gotten tired drawing waves, and I wasn't really sure weather I liked it. It's a first serious time drawing water, and I'm also just a newby at using coloured pencils in a serious way, so this drawing was quite a challenge. I think the overall, peacefull mood came out quite well, though the water isn't that realistic. Too much colours, too little foam, too little splashiness. But considering it's a first time, I think it's not that bad. I drew the sea with a little help from two stock pictures (below), but the mermaid, her pose and her tail and such are all from my own imagination.

Tell me what you think, comments, critiques and favourites are of course much appreciated!

Update
I replaced the photograph with a scan, it looks so much better now! Because of it's size I didn't quite know how to scan it, until I came across this wonderful tutorial [link] by `misskittyoooo . Definately worth a look! I also slightly changed the story, because it sounded even more lame than it does now :meow: . Also something I hadn't mentioned before: If you are interested, I could upload some WIP shots of this drawing. I won't if no one is interested, but if you are, don't hesitate to ask!

Ps. Anyone who suggests a name for her will recieve a llama (if you haven't gotten one already :aww: )!

Cool name suggestions:
1. ~Rodopi : Alice
2. *LucieG-Stock : Aquarina and Aquarella

Technical stuff:
- Time: long, no idea.
- Materials: a sheet of paper I once stole from my drawing class, slightly larger than A4, cheap coloured pencils bought at some childrens store.
- Reference pictures: [link] by *LucieG-Stock
- Digital representation: It is a scan which has been changed in photoshop (contrast, levels and such) to match the origional. Also a watermark was added. Other than that, nothing has been modified. I had to scan it in two halves, because of it's size. The halves were stuck together in photoshop. The line is still a little visible, especially in the air, but this is as good as I could get it right now.
